What does the doctor due if you’re 40 weeks and 4 cm dialated at your appointment?

Since active labor starts at 5 cm will they send you to the hospital if you’re 4 centimeters at your appointment when she/he does the internal exam? I have an appoinment in a few days and I’ll be 40 weeks then. But will she tell me to go home or have me go to the hospital? Has anyone had an experience when at a doctors visit they sent them to the hospital even if you were not in labor?

You can be 4 cm. for many weeks before labor begins, so there is no point in sending you to the hospital just because you are dilated. You could sit there for a week waiting for labor to begin.
The doctor SHOULD send you home and tell you to go to the hospital when labor DOES begin and your contractions are well established. If she recommends that you dirctly go to the hospital, be sure you understand the risks/benefits of induction, because you’ll probably end up being induced.

My doctor told me it wasn’t so much about dilation as it is about contractions. She told me she’d send me to the hospital if my contractions were 5 minutes apart. It really depends on your doctor, but if you’re dilated to 4 and not having regular contraction, she’ll probably send you home.
Edit: At my 39 week appointment, my water broke during my internal so I ended up getting sent to the hospital right after that.

she will probably strip your membrains, in which she’ll scrape your cervix with her fingers and manipulate your cervix to open up more and cause contractions. That’s what my obgyn did at my 40 week apt. she stripped my membrains, had me wait in the waiting room, checked me an hr later and I was 6cm and went straight to the hospital
I had a 9 1/2 lb baby boy ON my due date!! good luck!

Unless your water has broken or you are contracting and rapidly dilating, they probably wont admit you. I was dilated to a 4 for over 2 weeks! Your doctor might sweep your membranes, but you’ll still get sent home. I had mine swept twice and it did nothing except stretch me to a 4. You might also talk about possible induction, but unless there is a good reason you should wait to be induced until after 41 weeks. They wont admit you unless you are truly in labor or are concerned about you or the baby.

Most probably you will get sent home. You may set an induction date, as you will now be past due.
